Upstate New York Day Trips on a Budget

When I began my budgeting journey back in 2013, I needed to find creative ways to get out of the house and explore without it costing much. Thankfully, I lived in Upstate New York at the time and there is SO much to do and see!

Here are ten budget-friendly day trip ideas for exploring Upstate New York:

  1. Finger Lakes Wine Country: Take a tour of the region's wineries and vineyards, many of which offer tastings and tours at affordable prices.

  2. Watkins Glen State Park: Hike the gorge trail and marvel at the waterfalls and rock formations in this beautiful park, which offers free admission.

  3. Ithaca Farmers Market: Browse the stalls of local farmers and artisans, sample delicious food, and enjoy live music at this popular market on the shore of Cayuga Lake.

  4. Letchworth State Park: Known as the "Grand Canyon of the East," this park offers stunning views of the Gennesee River gorge and several hiking trails.

  5. Adirondack Park: Explore the largest state park in the country, which offers hiking, fishing, kayaking, and other outdoor activities.

  6. Niagara Falls: See one of the world's most famous natural wonders, which can be visited on a budget by taking a self-guided walking tour or riding the Maid of the Mist boat.

  7. Lake George: Spend a day at the "Queen of American Lakes," which offers swimming, boating, hiking, and other outdoor activities.

  8. Saratoga Springs: Take a walking tour of this historic town, known for its mineral springs, Victorian architecture, and horse racing.

  9. Hudson River Valley: Visit the homes of famous historical figures such as Franklin D. Roosevelt and Vanderbilt, and explore the scenic Hudson River.

  10. Howe Caverns: Take a tour of this underground cave system, which offers guided tours at affordable prices.

BONUS: Chittenango Falls - One of my favorites! Bring a picnic and spend the whole day!

Remember to plan ahead and check for any fees or admission prices before embarking on your day trips, and bring along your own food and drinks to save money on meals.

And while we're on the topic of daytripping, grab yourself a Pen Pal Adventure Book so you can share your budget-friendly day trip experience and then pass the book onto your friend or neighbor so they can read, adventure and share their story as well! The book is less than $10 on Amazon!
